Modal vs. Polyester: What Every Guy (and Every Dad) Should Know About What Sits Against His Skin

Underwear is the one piece of clothing that never comes off during the day. For 16 hours, it sits pressed against the most temperature-sensitive part of a man's body. Most guys have never given the label a second thought — but there's a real difference between what modal does to your body and what polyester does.

The one job of your underwear

Your body was built with a design feature that a lot of guys forget: the testicles hang outside the body for a reason. Sperm production happens best at about 2–3°C below core body temperature. The scrotum is nature's cooling system.

This isn't fringe science. A 2026 review published in Translational Andrology and Urology puts it plainly: "Scrotal thermoregulation is a recognized feature of normal spermatogenesis, with testicular function occurring at temperatures below core body temperature."

The clinical takeaway from that same review — the one urologists actually give patients — is that "avoidance of excessive scrotal heat exposure may be considered as a general measure." Nobody's saying underwear determines your fertility. What researchers are saying is: don't cook the equipment. And what you wear against your skin all day is one of the easier levers to pull.

What polyester actually is

Polyester is plastic. Specifically, polyethylene terephthalate — the same family as your water bottles. It's spun into fibers that are strong, cheap, and shrink-resistant, which is why it dominates the underwear aisle at big-box stores.

The trade-off is that plastic doesn't breathe. It traps heat. It doesn't absorb moisture — it just moves it around on the surface. If you've ever peeled off a sweaty polyester t-shirt after a workout, you know the feeling. Now imagine that pressed against your body all day, every day.

A 1993 experimental study by Ahmed Shafik, published in the Archives of Andrology, was one of the first to compare fabrics directly. Later reviews — including Jung and Schuppe (2007) in Andrologia — have consistently noted that tighter, less breathable garments produce measurably higher scrotal temperatures than looser, more breathable ones.

What modal actually is

Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric made from beech tree pulp. It's essentially a plant fiber that's been reconstituted into thread — closer to cotton than to plastic.

What matters for skin contact:

  • Breathable. Modal has natural micro-gaps in the fiber that let heat and moisture escape.
  • Absorbent. Modal absorbs about 50% more moisture than cotton — which means sweat gets pulled off the skin rather than pooled against it.
  • Soft. The fibers are round and smooth (polyester fibers are rougher). That's why modal feels like nothing.
  • Stable. Unlike cotton, modal doesn't shrink or lose shape after washing. So the fit stays honest.

None of this is magic. It's just what happens when a fabric was designed for skin instead of durability.

Why this matters more for boys

Growing boys sweat a lot. They run, they play, they wear the same pair from breakfast until bath time. If that pair is made of a fabric that traps heat and holds moisture, it's a small daily insult you're layering onto their skin.

The Mínguez-Alarcón study out of Harvard (2018) — 656 men, funded by the NIH — found that men who wore looser, more breathable underwear had 25% higher sperm concentrations and lower FSH levels than men who didn't. The researchers' explanation is straightforward: less heat, better function.

Nobody's making a medical claim here. But when you're picking underwear for a growing kid, "breathable and moisture-wicking" isn't a marketing phrase. It's a design decision that adds up over years of daily wear.
